The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued a warning Thursday that a measles epidemic is intensifying across the Americas, with significant outbreaks reported in Mexico, Guatemala, the United States, and Canada. The alert comes less than two years before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, drawing millions of international visitors. The World Cup, scheduled for June and July 2026, will be the first to be hosted by three countries and is expected to draw record crowds. With matches in 16 cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the tournament could become a vector for the disease if travelers are not immunized. PAHO emphasized that unvaccinated individuals, especially infants too young for the vaccine and those with compromised immune systems, are at highest risk. The resurgence of measles in the Americas mirrors global trends, with the World Health Organization reporting a 79% increase in cases worldwide in 2023 compared to the previous year.
