Contesto
French oil giant TotalEnergies announced Wednesday that its Satorp refinery in Saudi Arabia has resumed operations at a capacity of 230,000 barrels per day after being shut down earlier this month following damage from air strikes during the Iran war. The facility, a joint venture between Saudi state oil company Aramco, which holds a 62.5 percent stake, and TotalEnergies with 37.5 percent, was forced to close on April 8 after three units sustained damage in the attacks. The company said the undamaged units were able to restart, and the refinery has been operating since April 14. “Following the events of 8 April, which affected three units at the Satorp site and led to its shutdown as a safety precaution, the undamaged units were able to be restarted, and the refinery has been operating at a capacity of 230,000 b/d since 14 April,” TotalEnergies said in a statement. The Satorp refinery, located in Jubail on Saudi Arabia’s eastern coast, is one of the kingdom’s largest refining complexes, with a total capacity of 400,000 barrels per day. The current output of 230,000 b/d represents just over half of its normal capacity, indicating that the damaged units remain offline for repairs. The shutdown and partial restart highlight the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure in the region amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia. The air strikes that hit the refinery on April 8 were part of a broader escalation in the Iran war, which has targeted oil facilities across the Gulf. The restart comes as global oil markets remain volatile, with supply disruptions from the conflict contributing to price fluctuations. The Satorp refinery processes Arabian crude oil into refined products such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, serving both domestic and international markets. Analysts note that while the partial restart provides some relief, the full restoration of capacity will depend on the extent of the damage to the three affected units and the availability of replacement parts, which may be delayed due to supply chain disruptions caused by the war. It remains unclear when the damaged units will be fully repaired, and whether the refinery can return to...
