Contesto

Tunisia’s oldest human rights organisation, the Tunisian League for Human Rights (LTDH), has been ordered to suspend all activities for the remainder of the month, a move that activists and civil society groups condemn as the latest step in a widening government campaign to silence independent voices. The suspension, now in its tenth day, was imposed by the administration of President Kaïs Saïed and officially justified by the need for the LTDH to regularise its tax and administrative status. But the measure has been met with deep concern among human rights defenders, who see it as part of a broader pattern of pressure on non-governmental organisations critical of the government. Several other associations have faced similar suspensions in recent months, fueling fears that the space for dissent in Tunisia is shrinking. Founded in 1976, the LTDH is one of the most respected civil society organisations in the Arab world and played a prominent role in the country’s 2011 revolution that toppled longtime dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. It has long been a watchdog on government abuses and a key advocate for political freedoms. The current suspension marks one of the most direct confrontations between the state and an established human rights body under Saïed’s presidency. The timing of the suspension has also raised eyebrows. It comes amid a broader crackdown on political opponents, journalists, and activists since Saïed consolidated power in 2021, dissolving parliament and rewriting the constitution. Critics argue that the government is using administrative and fiscal pretexts to neutralise organisations that could mobilise opposition or document rights violations. For now, the LTDH says it is examining its legal options to challenge the suspension. But with the government showing little willingness to reverse course, many in Tunisia’s civil society are asking whether the country’s once-celebrated democratic transition is being systematically dismantled. The coming weeks will test whether the league can resume its work or whether this suspension becomes a permanent silence.
